Mama Turns 100 is a revenge comedy. Mama throws a party for her centennial birthday and also invites Ana who was once her domestic servant and now lives in her own home with her bohemian husband Antonio. Mama’s relatives, and above all her daughter-in-law, believe that it is high time that mama died and impatiently await to share the estate she will leave behind. Meanwhile Mama is aware that they are plotting to kill her. Saura conceives a dysfunctional family with its absurd, idiosyncratic rules and rituals, petty infighting, and superficial civility and distractions. Interweaving psychological trauma and magical realism Mama Turns 100 was nominated for the Academy Awards.
