LA RÉGION CENTRALE, 1971

Canada| 16mm, Colour, 180'| No Dialogue

Director: Michael Snow

Michael Snow mounts a camera on a rotating, pre-programmed machine and places it on a mountain top in Quebec. During five days of shooting, the deserted landscape is filmed in every possible angle as the camera circles in all directions by the aid of a machine. The resulting three-hour film is completely divorced of any human point of view, movement, or temporality. La Région Centrale shows the known world through nonhuman eyes with no focal point, and with nonhuman temporality that defy patience. This unusual ritual, which influenced many in art cinema, most notably Chantal Akerman, is a reflection on a humanless world.
