Cousin Angélica

Production date: 1974
Running time: 102’
Medium: DVD
Cast: José Luis López Vázquez, Fernando Delgado, Lina Canalejas
Luis, a businessman living in Barcelona, returns to his native village for his mother’s funeral. Here he recalls his childhood, his adolescence, and, above of all, his love for his cousin Angélica. Slowly, he is enveloped by the past he thought he had overcome. The film, which caused quite a stir in Spain with its provocative references to war and Catholicism, calls the roll of the collective memory by summoning the audience into the memories of the civil war from the childhood of a middle-aged man. The real subject of Cousin Angélica, which also competed at the Cannes Film Festival, is, through the emotional memory of a man, Spain itself.
