CARAVAGGIO

CARAVAGGIO

CARAVAGGIO
1986, Color, English, 93"
Director: Derek Jarman
In this film, Derek Jarman who wrote the script and directed explores the life and artistic passions of Michelangelo Caravaggio, the 17th century painter, focusing on his paintings. Jarman created an extraordinary biographic movie using a non-linear narrative, marked by stylistic pictures dominated by the colors of red and blue, while portraying the painter as a man at the intersection where his religious faith and sexual identity meet, at the same time making a personal statement of his own understanding of art of cinema that he strongly defended throughout all of his life. Caravaggio is the first movie of Tilda Swinton in her career in the cinema and it is also the first seed of friendship and partnership between Jarman and his muse Swinton, that would last for many years to come.
