ALBUM (ALBÜM), 2016

Turkey | DCP, Color, 103’ | Turkish

Director: Mehmet Can Mertoğlu

Cast: Şebnem Bozoklu, Murat Kılıç, Mustafa Ragıp Adıgüzel

Album had its world premiere in the Semaine de la Critique at the Cannes Film Festival and was the only Turkish film at the festival this year. The story is about a couple trying to conceal that their child is adopted. Bahar and Cüneyt are a couple who wish to cement their decade-long marriage with a child but are unable to conceive and decide to adopt. But in order to let everyone believe that the baby is theirs, they set out to prepare a fake family album of Bahar’s pregnancy and the birth of the baby. Humorously touching on topics such as bureaucratic ineptitude, class conflict, and neighborhood pressure, this social satire is also notable for its unusual use of the camera.
