18.00“Artists in Their Time” Exhibition Event

Istanbul Modern Cinema

For the first and only time in Turkey, Istanbul Modern is hosting a screening of the ambitious and controversial art film Triumphs and Lamentsby artist William Kentridge whose works are featured in the collection exhibition “Artists in Their Time”.

Known for his animations, drawings, theater plays, sculptures, videos, and installations, artist William Kentridge, who was born in Johannesburg, has conceived a colossal tribute to the history of Rome, a project that took 12 years to complete. The last two years were documented as a film titled Triumphs and Laments. The film will be screened only during the summer of 2017 in over twenty contemporary art institutions around the world.

For the project, William Kentridge has prepared a contemporary frieze made up of 90 ten-meter high icons thatare displayed along a 550-meter portion of the banks of the river Tiber. On this frieze, the artist reinterprets important figures in the history of Rome alongside the city’s memories, both good and bad, from the murder of Remus and Bernini’s sculptures to Pasolini’s death and the refugee crisis. While this new story created by Kentridge through his ephemeral icons on the river’s white travertine embankment will disappear within a few years, the memory of the frieze will live on only in the documentary.

The screening is free of charge.
