Having shot experimental films during his school years, Ali Kazma works in the field of video. His works focus on concepts such as humans, space and time, and he aims to keep up with nature, architecture and the time of ‘things’. Kazma investigates the people’s production and the transformation they experience and reveal in the process of production, while also examining the significance of space in human life. He addresses the impact of space on human psychology under titles such as history, philosophy and technology, and seeks to create a whole from these parts.
Ali Kazma places human nature and labor at the center of the “Obstructions” series, in which he deals with the trades and production techniques that typically remain in the background. He brings to the fore moments when the human body is involved in production processes and prolongs them through repetition, alienating the viewer from their surroundings. In “Studio Ceramist”, another piece in the series on constructing and shaping, he records the gestures of ceramic artist Alev Ebüzziya. The ceramics made from clay, to which Ebüzziya gives shape with her fingers, point to meticulous human intervention. Through these works, Kazma encourages us to reflect on how human beings are transformed into vehicles in today’s relationships between production and consumption, and their power to shape themselves and the world around them.
