Summer Mood

Summer Mood August 20–27, 2020

Istanbul Modern Cinema continues its online screenings in August. Revolving around the theme of summer days, the program includes early examples of short films as well as Theo van Gogh’s feature film A Day at the Beach (Een Dagje Naar het Strand, 1984) based on the bestseller novel by Heere Heeresma. Among other films in the program, Scheveningen (1931) offers a record of people on vacation at the beach in the Netherland’s famous seaside resort of Scheveningen, while the stencil colored film In Sunny Spain (1912) displays couples dancing in front of the camera and women posing with a fan in their hand. Both films will be accompanied by original music created by composer and musician Başar Ünder. The program also features Alice’s Day at Sea (1924) about the adventures of Alice and her dog on a summer day; a rarity directed by Walt Disney that combines animation and live action and in which dream and reality intermingle.
