Rendez-vous with Directors 2: Derviş Zaim

Rendez-vous with Directors 2: Derviş Zaim May 15–22, 2014

Istanbul Modern Cinema continues its series of rendez-vous, hosting directors who stand out for their artistic identity and original approach in Turkey’s present-day film culture. Directors from diverse generations are invited to the program which focuses on the dynamics of present-day cinema and the directors’ productions from their own standpoint.

The second guest of the series is Derviş Zaim, the director who has earned himself aunique place with the new perspective and meanings he has brought to recent Turkish cinema and created a turning point in 1996 with his first film Somersault in a Coffin (Tabutta Rövaşata). The rendezvous will treat of the director’s marginal characters, his interest in traditional handicraft, and his cinema, which unhesitatingly wanders through the corridors of history; a cinema which is symbolic in places but political at all times. Besides the screening of eight films by Zaim, the program features conversations on the director’s cinema and presentations by film critics.

Besides seven feature films by the director, Zaim’s documentary, Parallel Trips, will also be screened for the first time in Turkey with special presentations by members of SIYAD (Turkish Film Critics Association) such as Olkan Özyurt, Sevin Okyay, Janet Barış, Burçin Yalçın ve Elif Tunca.

Cast members who took part in Zaim’s films, such as Mehmet Ali Nuroğlu, Mustafa Uğurlu ve Hazar Ergüçlü, will also participate in the program.
