Armenian Architects of Istanbul

9 December 2010 - 9 January 2011

In collaboration with 2010 İstanbul European Capital of Culture Agency, International Hrant Dink Foundation and HAYCAR Solidarity Association of Architects and Engineers, İstanbul Modern hosts the exhibition Armenian Architects of İstanbul in the Era of Westernization which displays the contributions of Armenian architects who played a part in the shaping of İstanbul in the 19th and 20th centuries. Carried out within the scope of the İstanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture program, the exhibition is curated by architect Hasan Kuruyazıcı. While on the one hand the exhibition emphasizes the role Armenian architects played in the Westernization of the architectural visage of İstanbul during the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, on the other it introduces more than 100 buildings by approximately 40 Armenian architects most of whom are no longer remembered today. In the exhibition, which includes two short films, visitors find the opportunity to learn about these buildings and spaces through an audio system.
