Muses June 18–30, 2021

Istanbul Modern Cinema presents a selection of films that address the concept of inspiration. Some fictional and some documentary, these films depict the arrival and disappearance of inspiration as well as muses, who are believed to have divine powers. The films in the selection include, the documentary titled My Rembrandt, which looks at one of the most important painters in the history of art, Rembrandt’s inspirational energy, which extends from museums to collectors and which is still strong today; Shirley, which examines the intricate relationship between the famous writer of horror and mystery books Shirley Jackson and Rose, the young woman, whom she decides to make the subject of her new novel; Talking about Trees, depicting four filmmakers in Sudan who continue to draw inspiration from cinema, even though the political regime prohibits it, and Christian Petzold's fairy tale titled Undine, bringing mythology to contemporary Berlin and which competed at the Berlin Film Festival.
