Born with cerebral palsy to a poor family, Christy Brown is unable to control his body, and is bound to the wheelchair while only able to make grunt-like noises. Yet, one day, Brown discovers that his left foot is not affected by the illness. He now has a reason to hold on to life, and is able to express his emotions and show what’s hidden in his soul to his family as well as the world with the novels and poems he will write with his left foot. Nominated for five Academy Awards, Jim Sheridan’s first feature film where he depicts the true life story of Christy Brown, one of the most prominent names from Irish literature, also brought Daniel Day-Lewis his first Academy Award for Best Actor.
