Ümit Ünal’s directorial debut for a feature-length film 9 is also the first film that was shot completely digitally in Turkey. 9 depicts the inquiry into the murder of a lonely girl in one of Istanbul’s neighborhoods. Ünal chose to shoot this detective film in a single location where we witness the police testimonies of six of the seemingly innocuous residents of the neighborhood. Through characters from different walks of life such as the “American”, the old-time revolutionary Salim, who has returned from the United States after living there for 13 years; Saliha who is known for her maternal side; the neighborhood roughneck Tunç, and the photographer Firuz, the film offers a critique of society and was chosen as the film nominee from Turkey for the 75th Academy Awards.
