Opening the new season with TV series, a medium currently in fierce competition with movies, Istanbul Modern Cinema presents gripping stories by prominent directors from different countries and periods. The oldest series in the program is Aşk-ı Memnu (Forbidden Love), an adaptation of the novel by Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil directed by Halit Refiğ for TRT in 1975. A new adaptation filmed in 2008 sparked much popular interest. The older version stars Müjde Ar, Salih Güney, Neriman Köksal, Şükran Güngör, and Çolpan İlhan. Other series in the program are as follows: Berlin Alexanderplatz, the 14-part masterpiece filmed for West German television in 1980 by legendary German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder; Lars Von Trier’s hair-raising cult hospital series The Kingdom (Riget); and the black comedy miniseries Li’l Quinquin (P’tit Quinquin), directed in 2014 by Bruno Dumont for ARTE and which premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight section at Cannes.
