The “Museums Talk” series was launched by Istanbul Modern in 2012. Germany is the guest for this year’s program, held in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Istanbul. Max Hollein, the director of three different art institutions in Frankfurt, will be sharing his experiences on March 25.
Istanbul Modern’s “Museums Talk” program aims to establish a new conversation platform between leading international museum directors and museum audiences in Turkey. Following the USA and the UK, the program continues with Germany.
In collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Istanbul, “Museums Talk: From Germany” invites museum directors and curators from art institutions in Germany to discuss the German models of museums and art institutions.
The first guest of “Museums Talk: From Germany” is Max Hollein, the long-standing director of the Städel Museum, the Liebieghaus Sculpture Collection, and the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt. Also a member of Istanbul Modern’s International Advisory Board, Max Hollein will give a lecture on March 25 about the institution of the museum and its audiences. This will be followed by talks by Dr. Yılmaz Dziewior (Director, Museum Ludwig, Köln) on April 22 and by Ellen Blumenstein (Chief Curator, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin) on May 24, who will both be at Istanbul Modern to share their experiences.
Museums have a responsibility toward society
In his lecture, Max Hollein will draw attention to the fact that museums have been in a process of continuous development over the years and that the museum public is a multifaceted group with varied expectations and levels of knowledge. Believing that we need to cater for different levels of knowledge and interests to allow museum visitors to have an exhilarating experience, Max Hollein will continue his talk by emphasizing that museums are not just places to visit, but have a function –a responsibility toward society. The program “Museums Talk: From Germany” will also focus on key topics such as museum architecture and expansion projects, collecting and non-collecting institution models, curatorial practices, and new modes of programming and museum management.
