Istanbul Modern’s exhibition “The Event of a Thread” presents a selection of yazma (originally used for hand-painted kerchief) and block prints by Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu (1911-1975), an artist who has never refrained from experimenting, and who has continuously merged various painting techniques with his unique approach to art practice.

Offering a selection of the production of textiles, its narration and tools of expression from Turkey and around the world, the exhibition addresses the almost forgotten art of yazma through the interpretations of Eyüboğlu, as the first artist in Turkey to incorporate textile production to his canvases. The exhibition includes a selection of yazma and block prints designed by Eyüboğlu who addressed the practice of yazma as something “beautiful and useful” and reinterpreted traditional patterns after 1950. The section dedicated to Eyüboğlu who unites his interest in yazma with painting, also includes photographs recently taken at the artist’s home-studio by photographer Ziya Tacir.

At the event, art historian Ömer Faruk Şerifoğlu will talk about Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu’s artistic practice and the background story to his yazma production, and share anecdotes regarding his block prints with the audience.

The event is free of charge.
