Rendezvous with Cevdet Erek at Plurivocality

November 20, 2014

18.00 – 20.00

Conversation on the Artist’s Work and Collective Performance of Shore Scene Soundtrack

The exhibition “Plurivocality” explores the interface between visual and auditory arts in Turkey. Museum visitors will get to meet the artist Cevdet Erek, for a conversation covering two works: Black with White, featured in the same location with the same configuration as in “Neighbours” the exhibition, and the later addition SSS (Shore Scene Soundtrack). The artist will speak about how the interaction between the two exhibitions, held the same year, influenced his own work and will open for discussion his work Black with White. During the event, the performances of other artists based on the recently published Arabic edition of the SSS book as well as the possibilities of notation in group performances will also be discussed, and volunteers will try their hand at a collective performance.

Black with White, in which various works are brought together, was exhibited for the first time in “Neighbours” in early 2014. Cevdet Erek later revisited the work for “Plurivocality” keeping the work in the same location with the same configuration and making some additions and changes in the space. He thus made it possible for the work to be reinterpreted in a new context in the same institution and space, this time through the interrelations between sound/music and the visual. For this version the work was surrounded by walls, and the floor and the adjoining wall were covered with carpet. Although an ordinary carpet, it is a key element of Erek’s work SSS (Shore Scene Soundtrack), which he has been exhibiting since 2006. Some of the carpets used in previous exhibitions and performances of SSS are also featured in the exhibition.

The event is free of charge and will be held in the area of the exhibition “Plurivocality” where Cevdet Erek’s installations SSS and Black in White are displayed.
