Andante Rendezvous at Repertoire

October 23, 2014

Andante Writers and Musicians Discuss the Development of the Symphony Orchestra in Turkey since the Republic’s Foundation

Thursday, October 23, 18:30

Presented within the scope of the exhibition Plurivocality, the Repertoire study focuses on visual and musical production in Turkey over a period of 300 years. In conjunction with Repertoire, Istanbul Modern hosts writers of Andante, the monthly magazine on classical music in Turkey, to discuss the themes explored in Repertoire.

The Symphony Orchestra was a subject seriously considered after the proclamation of the Republic in Turkey. The Mızıka-ı Hümayun (the Imperial Band) moved to Ankara on Atatürk’s order, and over time it became the current Presidential Symphony Orchestra. After a long period of silence, other symphony orchestras would eventually be founded by the state, leading to the emergence of privately-owned symphony orchestras after the mid-1990s. The event focuses on performances that have taken place in Turkey for nearly a hundred years and explores whether or not a symphony orchestra tradition, with its pluses and minuses, has been established in the country.

Moderated by Andante’s Editor in Chief Serhan Bali, the event will be held in the Repertoire area at the entrance of the exhibition Plurivocality.

The event is free of charge.
