The second film of the war trilogy follows the resistance fighters’ tragic journey through the city’s sewers during the Warsaw Uprising. A group of men and women struggle to protect both their bodies and their spirits in the underground hell of Warsaw. The fact that the script was written by someone who himself took part in the Warsaw Uprising situates the film historically. Kanal earned Wajda the Special Jury Prize at Cannes, bringing him recognition on the international film scene.
