“Whisper of Trees” evokes nature—to which we have not been paying heed for a long time—calling out to us anew. Composed of raw metal pipes and chains that hang from inside them, the design embodies the metaphor of the wishing tree. Pipes represent every tree that has been killed. With the aid of the sea breeze, the dangling chains start moving and producing sounds. Touching Istanbul Modern’s courtyard only at two points, the design provides shaded areas and allows the space to be used in different ways.
The design questions the concepts of sustainability and impermanence, and the dilemma between the two. The project was commissioned for a specific space, but we propose that it later be moved to forestlands that are in danger of extinction, where it will exist for many years. The iron and concrete pipes and the steel chains were selected for their durability and ability to acquire a warm patina with age.
Structurally, the metal elements differ according to their load-bearing properties and the sound they will produce. Plans call for the main load-bearing system to be made of cast iron pipes and the rest of sheet metal. It is proposed that the hanging chains be of varying thicknesses and lengths in order to create a variety of sounds.
