Armenian Architects of Istanbul

In collaboration with 2010 Istanbul European Capital of Culture Agency, International Hrant Dink Foundation and HAYCAR Solidarity Association of Architects and Engineers, Istanbul Modern hosted the exhibition "Armenian Architects of İstanbul in the Era of Westernization" which displays the contributions of Armenian architects who played a part in the shaping of Istanbul in the 19th and 20th centuries. Carried out within the scope of the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture program, the exhibition was curated by architect Hasan Kuruyazıcı. While on the one hand the exhibition emphasized the role Armenian architects played in the Westernization of the architectural visage of Istanbul during the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, on the other it introduced more than 100 buildings by approximately 40 Armenian architects most of whom are no longer remembered today. In the exhibition, which included two short films, visitors found the opportunity to learn about these buildings and spaces through an audio system.
