Underscene Project Rendezvous with Merve Şendil

November 27, 2014

Thursday, November 27, 15:30 – 18:30

Istanbul Modern hosts a rendezvous with the artist Merve Şendil, featured in the exhibition Plurivocality, along with surprise musicians that contributed to Şendil’s installation in the exhibition, the Underscene Project open archive. At the event, visitors can listen to recordings from the archive and talk about independent music groups together with the artist and musicians.

Combining the visual arts and the field of music in her works, Merve Şendil describes Underscene Project as “an initiative that identifies unconventional, off-the-books methods to reproduce, present, and circulate music, or proposes new methods, dealing with how Turkey’s younger generation is motivated to and proceeds in making music today”. Having shown a great interest in non-mainstream music genres since she was a student, the artist began building her archive in 1998. Including all kinds of recordings which are not professionally in circulation, the archive brings together many different musicians and offers a reference for Turkey’s alternative music culture.

The event is free of charge and will be held in the area of the exhibition Plurivocality where Merve Şendil’s installation Underscene Project is displayed.
