Bülent Ortaçgil and Murat Meriç on Çekirdek Sanatevi (Art House)

November 13, 2014

Thursday, November 13, 18:30

The final section of “Repertoire”, the research project within the scope of “Plurivocality”, begins with the 1950s. This section examines the exhibition projects created during the first years of the multi-party era, the search for spaces conducive to producing art, and the period’s collective initiatives. The research presents examples of projects and initiatives that offered a kind of artistic variety, with the exhibitions held at Helikon Derneği (The Helikon Foundation) and Maya Sanat Galerisi (Maya Art Gallery), as well as Çekirdek Sanatevi.

Çekirdek Sanatevi was a small space founded by Fikret Kızılok in 1982 so that people could stage musical experiments. Later, Bülent Ortaçgil’s first concert at Çekirdek was published with the title “Rüzgara Söylenen Şarkılar” (Songs Sung for the Wind). When the friendship between Ortaçgil and Kızılok turned into a collaboration, they began managing the Art House together. In the course of events, Çekirdek became an art house which supported original projects, new musical quests, and a dynamic diversity, and shared the common language of the two lyricists. It was at the center of a form of production and thinking based on sharing, where everybody could participate in concerts and could buy the cassette tapes recorded on the spot when they left.

Istanbul Modern hosts a conversation with Bülent Ortaçgil, moderated by Murat Meriç, on the founding of Çekirdek Sanatevi, its practices, the collaborations it produced, the archival character of its concert recordings, and the reasons for its closing.

The event is free of charge.
