A Talk with Fahrettin Örenli

January 16, 2014

Thursday, January 16, 2014, 18.30

Artist Fahrettin Örenli, featured in the exhibition Neighbours, speaks about his latest work within the scope of the exhibition. The talk, to be held on the One Square Meter stage installed especially for the exhibition Neighbours in Istanbul Modern’s temporary exhibition hall, will be enriched by the participation of Prof. Ertuğrul Ahmet Tonak, known for his research on economics, and the exhibition curators.

Conspiracy Wall > ANARTIST looks at how social, political and economic problems have affected human life throughout history, particularly over the last decade. But more importantly, it observes and queries for the future how these have affected nature – the place where existence comes into being. The installation aims to understand and deal with the complex individual, social, and political issues of the age we live in. Aware of what the next age will be like or how it will disappear, the work focuses on the importance – in terms of investigating the subject and creating narratives out of it – not just of understanding our own environment, but also of observing and questioning that environment through what it makes us feel. These investigations are about the direct relevance of economy and politics to art and education: They lay emphasis on the importance of learning from the ground up and not by rote, of adopting a more constructive approach, and of not repeating past mistakes.By treating of these issues, and also by becoming a piece of installation art, the artist book Conspiracy Wall > ANARTIST critically questions today’s cultural and social developments as well as the function of the language used by art and artists.”

The event is free of charge and will be held in Turkish.
